Catalan Influence on Spanish
El catalán(Catalan) is a lengua romance(Romance language) spoken in Cataluña(Catalonia), las Islas Baleares(Balearic Islands), Andorra(Andorra), Murcia(Murcia), Franja de Aragón(La Franja), and Alguer(Alghero).
Catalan has coexisted with el castellano(Castilian, or Spanish) in the Península Ibérica(Iberian Peninsula) for centuries. Both languages have influenced one another considerably. Many of the Spanish words adapted from Catalan refer to gastronomy and manufacture.
Catalán vs. Valenciano
Valenciano(Valencian) is the official name given to the language spoken in the Comunidad Valenciana(Valencian Community) and in El Carche(Carche), Murcia. Although Valencian and Catalan speakers can understand each other, there are phonetic and lexical differences between the languages.
Adaptations, Calques, and Loanwords
- A linguistic adaptación(adaptation) is a word or phrase taken from another language but adapted to the target language for phonologic, lexical, or syntactic reasons. For example, breeze is an adaptation of the Spanish word brisa.
